Tuning knobs

I'm looking at tuning a PostgreSQL installation and I'm finding the
documentation confusing. (I'll also add that tuning in general is a
mystery to me!)

What are the main 'knobs' that can be used to tune PostgreSQL? If
someone can tell me that I can concentrate on learning about those
those initially. Maybe there isn't a subset that can be considered to
be core for tuning?

PostgreSQL 8.3 or 8.4 on RHEL 4 and 5.

Cheers,

Cliff
