Getting machines on the local network to see IIS output
I have set up a peer to peer network of machines running Windows Vista. I
have installed IIS on one of the machines. I can see the IIS welcome page
without problem on http://localhost. When I try http://machinename on the
same machine, the page appears after a delay. When I try this from another
Vista machine on the local network I get a "Can't connect" error - I get the
same error if I turn off the "Friendly error messages" option in Internet
Explorer.
Apart from this, the network appears to be working OK. I can access network
shares from other machines, and can ping one machine from the other using the
machine name.
The local network is being run from a wireless router with a firewall. I am
using Windows Firewall on each of the local machines.
I don't know much about IIS - I'm using this set up so I can edit a local
copy of a website using Front Page from any machine on the network. I managed
to get this to work when I had Windows xp - what do I need to do in Vista?
(I know I'm going to have to download FrontPage server extensions -but am
leaving that for another day)
Thanks in advance
Paul
Re: Getting machines on the local network to see IIS output
Have you created an exception for Port 80 in the Windows Firewall on the
machine that is hosting IIS?
Cheers

Re: Getting machines on the local network to see IIS output
Ken
Thanks for that - no I hadn't. I've been using Zone Alarm as my firewall up
to now, and have been a bit spoiled as it dealt with local networks very
simply.
I've now added the exception for the local network only and I can see IIS
from other machines.
It's easy when you know how!
thanks again
