One big dis-advantage is that, with so many companies blocking access
to facebook, loads of good potential contributers will not have access.

WTF is facebook anyway? The initial page tells me almost nothing :-(
Should I bother?

In general, it's a social networking website, much like Orkut,
Friendster and Hi5 (in case you've heard about any of these).

Is there a website that consolidates the vast array of social
networking websites? The website would, I imagine, automatically
create accounts for you on a number of social networking sites and
provide you with a single interface.

There's an attempt to have an open standard, but seeing as "social
networking" is the latest entity to be highly regarded in terms of
(mysterious) monetary value, it probably won't happen... not to mention
it's being organized by The Behemoth:

Not that I'm aware of, but I know that many of them are heavily using
microformats <http://microformats.org> to make the information on them
more "scrapable", and I believe that some allow you to import data from a
suitably microformatted page.
Thus the rudiments of syncing are there.
