is there any way of getting the online count for an IRC channel? Best,
without creating a user and logging in?

Modify the irc-daemon so that it can report the amount of users in a channel.

Otherwise use eggbot which can provide some nice services to the channel and
at the same time kan tell you the amount of connected users on the channel in
question, even the user names if so.
