Make apache require username and password for login

How do I make my Apache web server request a username and password for
login? I want to do this at the root level - ie challenge for all pages.

It doesn't have to be very secure - the basic access authentication will
suffice - WWW-Authenticate.

How do I switch this option on in Apache. I have Apache running on Windows.
at present.
