What auth mechanisms do I need

I am looking into setting up smtp auth and I see that there are many
auth mechanisms available. I am left wondering what mechanisms I
really need. Our users who will be using auth will be sending mail
to our server using either Outlook or Outlook Express. I guess that
the question boils down to: what mechanisms do Outlook and Outlook Express
use?
