I am totally fscking exasperated with localhost.localdomain
I use Fedora 7. I have been a sendmail user for like 12 years. And I
still cannot resolve a simple god damn problem:
all my outgoing mails are sent as me [at] localhost.localdomain.
I want them to be sent as me [at] algebra.com. (space added to foil usenet
harvesting spammers). My hostname is manifold.algebra.com, but I want
it masqueraded.
How can I resolve this seeming simple issue?
Here's my /etc/hosts:
# Do not remove the following line, or various programs
# that require network functionality will fail.
127.0.0.1 manifold localhost.localdomain localhost besm6-localhost
::1 manifold algebra.com localhost6.localdomain6 localhost6
Here's my sendmail.mc:

The lack of reading sendmail docs is why.

You can't have spaces inside -- it break RFC plus I'm pretty sure sendmail
will fart if you try it, that's why you and stuff like NO-SPAM.gmail.com in
your address or REMOVE-ME.gmail.com

What's in your submit.mc?
You might need masquerade setup there, too.

Presumably you only mean that for here in this post and not in general.

Horribly wrong. 127.0.0.1 should never have any name other than
'localhost' and the facts that RedHat screwed that simple issue up years
ago and that their error has metastasized into a half dozen
cargo-cultist distributions does not make it right.
> ::1 manifold algebra.com localhost6.localdomain6 localhost6
That's even worse.
Do you actually use IPv6? If not, there's certainly no reason for the
IPv6 loopback to exist and if so, not having it mapped to 'localhost'
(yes, just like the IPv4 loopback) is wrong.

What do you think that does?
Read the cf/README file from the Sendmail distribution for clues on how
to do masquerading and what the different things in the .mc file mean.

Now where did I hide that website...
Re: I am totally fscking exasperated with localhost.localdomain
The issue was mainly related to (gasp) contents of /etc/hosts.
I am totally livid right now.

If your hostname is "manifold", quoted line says
that fully qualifed hostname is "localhost.localdomain".
Do not put hostname to entry on /etc/hosts, which refer to localhost.

Re: I am totally fscking exasperated with localhost.localdomain
File "/etc/hosts" is improperly formatted.
The order of data on a line is:
IP_address FQDN Alias_names
A literal "localdomain" TLD isn't valid either.
These errors are in addition to the ones mentioned by others.
Is "/etc/hosts" even consulted for IPv6 addresses?

It *CAN* be. It is perfectly valid for anyone to define and use their
own private TLD for their own use.

That is is probably dependent on OS and configuration details. the
answer is certainly 'Yes' for MacOS X and Solaris.

Unsurprisingly, since MacOS X is BSD-like in many respects, "/etc/hosts"
is also consulted for IPv6 addresses by FreeBSD. The default file does,
in fact, contain an example like this:
::1 localhost localhost.my.domain
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.my.domain
The default sample file contains a comment describing why the answer may
be 'No', as Bill has hinted:
# In the presence of the domain name service or NIS, this file may not
# be consulted at all; see /etc/nsswitch.conf for the resolution order.
