compile sendmail on ubuntu

Hello NG,

I would like to use sendmail with Ubuntu linux (6.06 LTS). Unfortunately the
Ubuntu package available is quite old (8.13.5). Thus I tried to install the
old Ubuntu package first, and after that I compiled a current version from
the source (e.g. 8.13.8).
I did some modifications to the init script and the makefile (/etc/mail),
and used a sendmail.mc that worked fine on a fedora box as a template for my
sendmail.mc. I wasn't able to get sendmail running without errors (e.g. when
enabling some options in "sendmail.mc" and "access" , sendmail doesn't relay
mails for unknown reasons).

I haven't found any howtos on the web, concerning a "from scratch"
installation on Ubuntu yet. (e.g. containing a script that creates
appropriate directories , and a sendmail init script).
Does somebody know, how to compile sendmail on Ubuntu ? Are there some
resources on the web ?
