Issue: Host unknown (Name server: .: no data known)

Hello everyone,

Since today I got an issue with my sendmail. It does not send any mail
anymore, just returning the same error over and over again.
It does however, send internal mail.

If I try to send mail to another domain like 'domain.nl' it does return
with a bounce:

[bounce begin]

The original message was received at Wed, 8 Aug 2007 12:52:33 +0200

from ws-bc [192.168.0.54] (may be forged)

----- The following addresses had permanent fatal errors -----

<address [at] domain.nl>

----- Transcript of session follows -----

550 5.1.2 <address [at] domain.nl>... Host unknown (Name server: .: no data
known)

[bounce end]

Since we didn't change anything to the configuration lately and nothing
(really nothing) is to be found otherwise then this error, it doesn't become
any clearer to me.

Anyone a idea?

Regards,

Boy.

Your DNS seems to be broken.

If ALL mail to external domains is failing that way, it is almost surely
because you have made some change to your DNS environment such that
Sendmail can no longer get resolution of external domain names. That's
not necessarily cause by a change to Sendmail (in fact it almost surely
isn't) and may not even be due to a change on the machine Sendmail is
running on, although modifications to the resolver config or name
service switch config could cause it, as could unwise local packet
filtering.
