Is there a quick easy way of showing just the book, slider & record field, &
hiding the other stuff in the status field?

The only way to hide the Status area and keep those bits would be for
you to fully hide the area and re-create the bits you do want on the
normal screen area ... but the "slider" would be impossible to
re-create exactly as it works in the Status area.

You can set all the Layouts to NOT appear in the pop-up menu in the
Status area, so that sort-of removes that part.
