Extract fisrt frame from SWF
Hello,
I just wanted to know if anyone knows of any Perl module capable of extracting an image of the first frame of an SWF video file to convert this frame later say to JPEG.
Thank you in advance

Took off the multiple lists that you put - please don't cross post since
some people object to it.

A while back I looked at Ming which is probably what you want to do -
but I vaguely remember it not compiling on Windblows which was of no use
to me at the time. In the end I got what I wanted by using the .fla file
and Win32::GUITest.
Your request looks kind of suspect to me - it reads like you're trying
to rip off art from other people :)
Googling for 'perl swf' brings up quite a number of pages, most of which
seem to point to the Ming solution.
Have fun,
Just in

Hello Justin, thanks for you reply.

I cross posted only for one reason. I work on Windows but the production
server is Linux, so I thought if it was a CPAN module any solution would
work as most modules I used work on Linux and Windows.

No, I'm developing a Web site that sells videos and audio, all legal
All audio and video files will be uploaded in compressed format and in .swf
files just for visitors to be able to preview what they are buying.
My client didn't ask for this feature, he expects to have 2 fields, one for
the actual swf file, and one for the thumbnail (first frame of the movie),
but I wondered if it was posible to get this thumbnail directly instead of
uploading the 2 files.
Again, thank you for your reply, I'll do what you suggest
Mauricio

Personally I don't much care for the posting rules - like don't cross
post, don't top post . . . Its just that some people are very anal about
it and there are instances were the OP's email goes unanswered because
they don't adhere to the strict regime. I believe the term for it is
netiquette, but to me its an excuse for some people to be very abhorrent
and rude.

Your proposal for the site sounds cool. Do reply with your solution once
you've got some beta code.
Cheers

You probably want to post to the group that the product will eventually
run on. The reason to not cross-post is that many of us are subscribed
to more than one group and we get multiple copies. Pick the most
appropriate one and re-post to another group if the first one fails.

Not to be rude, but another of those netiquette rules is to not top-post
(intersperse your replies after the pertinent paragraph and remove parts
no longer relevent to your reply).
An even more important one is to maintain the proper quoting so we can
tell who said what. At this point in time it's impossible to tell.

While cross posting works well for usenet, the same is not necessarily
true (IMHO) for mailing lists for two reasons. First, anybody replying
must remove the mailing lists that they are not subscribed to from the
response, or manage the bounce messages that they will receive. Second,
while any news reader worthy of the name can mange cross posts
correctly, I an not aware of any mail software that can manage cross
posting to multiple mailing lists in the same way (if anybody knows of
mail software that can, I would be interested in a pointer).

Whatever your view of netiquette or posting conventions, they are mostly
arrived at through consensus over many years, to make communication in
fora such as this easier and more effective. Deliberately flouting those
conventions is seen as rude by many people. Most will simply ignore such
posts, but some are prepared to risk being called anal, or worse, by
trying to make the poster, and other readers, aware of the conventions.
Don't forget that your chances of getting a question answered is
proportional to how easy you are prepared to make it for those who might
volunteer their time to respond. For some tips on getting questions
answered, see http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html.
