sendmail + spamassassin
I compiled the latest version of spamassassin (3.1.0) on my sco box running
sendmail. Now what should I do ? Is there a guide to turn it on out there ?
Do I need procmail or that for other purposes ? I need this configuration
for my network.
Thanks

Sendmail can run milters, such as mimedefang. Mimedefang can do many
thing, including running spamassassin. This is good because you can
reject mail while it is being received. That is good because it minimizes
incorrect bounces while still allowing (semi-)legit senders to know the
mail didn't get through.
There are some other milters that are specific to running spamassassin,
you'll need to google for them.
I wonder if the latest spamassassin includes such a milter - not sure, I
might have read that somewhere.
You can also use something like "procmail" to run spamassassin to check
each message as it is being delivered to the user's inbox file. It might
be easier to set up, and might be easier to have individual preferences,
but the mail can't be bounced since the original connection is no longer
open. You set this up for the users, and it all happens automatically
from their point of view.
Some individual mail clients have hooks that allow a program such as
spamassassin to check the mail as part of their regular mail handling.
Again, it is too late to ever reject/bounce mail when that is done, but in
this case you need no system level setup at all (short of installing
spamassassin in the first place). But you do need instructions for the
users on how to select the appropriate mail client options to use it.

There's lots of information "out there" on this topic. Put shortly,
you've got several alternatives to choose from, depending on your
needs. For details, see:
