Win98 - DBD-Oracle install issue

Hi,

I am trying to install DBD-Oracle-1.16 along with DBI-1.46
DBI was installed successfully, but got errors intalling the DBD-Oracle-1.16.

C:\Perl\DBD-Oracle-1.16>perl Makefile.pl

A copy of vcvars32.bat can typically be found in the following
directories under your Visual Studio install directory:
Visual C++ 6.0: vc98\bin
Visual Studio .NET: vc7\bin

The ORACLE_HOME environment variable value (C:/ORAWIN95) is not valid.
It must be set to hold the path to an Oracle installation directory

See the README.clients file for more information.
ABORTED!

What should I set/unset to be able to connect to local oracle database.
Thankyou,
James.

John,

Two things.

Firstly, you cross-posted this message to two mailing lists, one of
which has no interest in this problem. This is bad netiquette.

Secondly, you have failed to check the mailing list archives to see if
this problem has come up before. You are the third person to ask a
question like this in the dbi-users list this week.

Please, check the dbi-users mailing list archives, and try to be more
careful with the recipient lists on e-mails you send.

Hi Sam,

Sorry for cross posting, was trying to get some
solution faster. No other intentions. New to this.

I have checked the following earlier and now
but not found any clues for my issue.

http://www.mail-archive.com/dbi-users [at] perl.org/msg23137.html
http://www.mail-archive.com/dbi-users [at] perl.org/msg23109.html

Could you please point me to the right fix.

Can you try upgrading your AS to build 810 (5.8.4) and using PPM to install DBI and
DBD-Oracle from my site?

Ppm install ftp://ftp.esoftmatic.com/outgoing/DBI/5.8.4/DBI.ppd
Ppm install ftp://ftp.esoftmatic.com/outgoing/DBI/5.8.4/DBD-Oracle.ppd

And let me know if there is an issue?

Thanks,

Jeff

As well as the other advice you have received, the above rings warning

Which version of Oracle are you running?

The above looks suspiciously like a version that would run on Windows 95 -
which would make it a particularly old version of Oracle. It's not version
7, is it?

Same error persists.

See: http://search.cpan.org/~timb/DBD-Oracle-1.16/Changes
" NOTE:
This release has major changes to Unicode support. See below.
It no longer supports the old Oracle 7 OCI interface.
It requires DBI >= 1.38 for some of the tests if using Perl 5.6.
It no longer supports Perl 5.5 or earlier."

So, upgrading Perl away from 5.3 is definitely required. 5.8 sounds good.

Oracle 7.2 is extremely old, and no longer supported by DBD::Oracle. (It's
been desupported by Oracle for several years). I don't know of any currently
supported versions of Oracle that run on Windows 98 - Windows 2000 is the
minimum nowadays. Current versions of Oracle are 9i (9.2.0.x) and 10g
(10.1.0.x).

You may have to decide between either upgrading Oracle and your operating
system, or using older versions of DBD::Oracle. If you want to use an older
version of DBD::Oracle, to run with your very old version of Oracle, you
will most likely have to compile it yourself or find someone who can.
Looking at Jeff Ulwin's binary distributions of DBD::Oracle, they are linked
against Oracle 8i or Oracle 9i, and so will not operate with Oracle 7.

Time to upgrade my friend... across the board! (It you still want to run
